Inflation rate edges up for January

DOHA: Qatar’s inflation, based on consumer price index (CPI), edged up to 0.4 percent in January, on month-on-month basis. The inflation is up by 0.9 percent on year-on-year.
A month-on-month analysis of CPI for January shows that there are five main group, where respective indices in this month have increased.  The  ‘health group’ rose by 2.2 percent, followed by ‘clothing and footwear’ and  ‘transport’ by 1.9 percent each, ‘furniture and household equipment’ by 1.1 percent; and ‘miscellaneous goods and services’ by 0.8 percent, according to the data released by the Ministry of Development Planning & Statistics (MDPS), QNA reported.
A decrease in prices is noticed in ‘food and beverages’ by 1.1 percent, followed by ‘recreation and culture’ by 0.6 percent, ‘restaurants and hotels’ by 0.2 percent, ‘education’ by 0.1 percent ,’tobacco’, ‘housing, water, electricity and gas’, and ‘communication’ groups have remained flat at the last months price level.
The year-on-year change in inflation reflects a 8.8 percent increase in ‘transport’, 5.3 percent increase in ‘health’, 3.8 percent in ‘clothing and footwear’ , 2.7 percent rise in ‘miscellaneous goods and services’, 1.2 percent increase in ‘furniture and household equipment and ‘0.9 percent rise in ‘education’.
Also there has been a decrease in price levels in four groups, namely: ‘Housing, water, electricity and other fuel’ by 5.4 percent, ‘recreation and culture’ by 1.8 percent, ‘communication’ by 1.1 percent, and ‘restaurants and hotels’ by 0.5 percent. No changes recorded in ‘tobacco’ group.
The CPI of January, excluding ‘housing, water, electricity and other fuel’ group stood at 109.4 showing an increase of 0.5 percent when compared to the index of December 2017, and a 2.9 percent when compared to the CPI of January 2017.
