Sanchez hails ‘spirited show’

CHANGZHOU: Qatar coach Felix Sanchez praised the performance of his players, saying they put up a spirited show to beat Oman 1-0 in their second AFC U-23 Asian Cup match clash yesterday.
Midfielder Akram Afif scored the only goal of the match in the 43rd minute as Qatar picked up three points to go to the top Group A at Changzhou Sports Centre.
Yesterday, Uzbekistan stunned China 1-0 in the other Group A clash. Qatar have six points from two matches following their 1-0 win over Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
“I am proud of my players as they have played against two strong teams, Uzbekistan and Oman so far and have performed well,” Sanchez said yesterday.
“I think both teams made a good effort today. It was great that we were able to get the full points,” he added.
“Oman pushed hard and made it difficult for us to control the ball at times, but we had our chances to score on the counter-attack,” Sanchez said
Hamad Al Azani, Oman’s head coach, said yesterday: “I am disappointed by the result. A lot of my players are young, and they have a (bright) future, we have to support them.”
Al Azani added: “I think we did well to restrict Qatar’s goal-scoring chances and had opportunities of our own in the first half and then in the second half when we changed our formation and played with two strikers.”
Earlier Uzbekistan beat China 1-0 to post their first win.
Uzbekistan head coach Ravshan Khaydarov said yesterday: “I am very happy with the performance of my players today. I think that (after losing the opening game) we have now improved the difficult situation we found ourselves in.”
Massimiliano Maddaloni, China’s head coach, said: “It was a pity that we lost this match. We tried many times to find an equaliser, but Uzbekistan really did limit our goal-scoring chances.”
