Campaign ahead of QIFF offers unique feel

DOHA: The ninth Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) presents ‘A different side of food’ kicking off a school campaign that offers around 700 students a mix of culture, heritage and healthy food experiences ahead of the much-anticipated launch of the biggest food festival in the country.

The healthy food and nutrition awareness programme being held in the run-up to the official launch of the festival next week is delivered in partnership with Qatar Culinary Professionals (QCP) and Msheireb Museums, said organizers Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA).

‘Students from 21 schools are going to visit Msheireb Museums to get to know the ancient historic heritage houses and old life through the pieces displayed at the Museums. In addition, there will be cooking lessons in which students are going to enjoy how to cook very healthy recipes,” Mashal Shahbik, Director of Festivals and Tourism Events at QTA said recently. Shahbik underline d the importance of reaching out to educate students through the QIFF with the increase in student participation this year compared to last year. 

“In comparison to the previous edition, we have an increase of 30 percent with around 700 students taking part in the programme and at QTA we are very proud of the fact that the festival enhances its presence by including students,” she added.

Local chefs Yousef Owaidah, Warda Ibrahim and others from Dana’s kitchen, along with Baladna chefs Sobhi Halima and Mohamed Dumrani and renowned vegan restaurateur Ghanem Al Sulaiti, are helping students distinguish between healthy nutrition and unhealthy foods, and understand the benefits and harms of each. 

During the sessions, the chefs prepare healthy and tasty snacks in front of the students, helping them gain a visual understanding of where food comes from and an appreciation of healthy alternatives to common snacks.  

“Culinary experiences are cultural, social, and entertaining. It is also important for our children to be taught that they are nutritional, and we are grateful to the support of our partners for sharing this message with the country’s youth,” said Shahbik.

“We are particularly pleased to be extending QIFF’s activities to Msheireb Museums this year allowing us to shed the spotlight on one of Doha’s key tourist attractions,” she added.

To take place from March 15 to 25 at the Hotel Park, the festival offers wide-ranging choices of food and beverages available at 177 food stalls, food trucks and trolleys.

Adding excitement to the festival are a number of new features such as a mini-zoo, a dedicated coffee zone and free fitness classes in addition to daily live performances and cultural shows and breathtaking fireworks display.

Organisers had also started the QIFF Menu which allows residents and visitors to enjoy mouth-watering food groupings of three menu items at a pre-set price of QR49 at stand-alone cafes and restaurants and QR99 at hotels.
